“Adopt a Cambodian Family” Project When you give to charity to help better the lives of poor and needy people in other lands, have you ever wondered who receives your help, what they look like, and how your donation has made a difference in their life? By participating in the “Adopt a Cambodian Family” Project, you can have this knowledge--and even, if you wish, develop a long-distance personal relationship with the family you help. Here’s how the Program will work: The overall goal of the Program is to provide a modest monthly stipend for food to feed up to twenty desperately poor Cambodian families who lack the means to support themselves (they are widows, children, profoundly sick or severely disabled, and the elderly who have neither income nor the possibility of help from a family member or their community). These are refugees or members of refugee families who tried but failed to flee Cambodia during the two decades of upheaval and violence of war in their country (1970-1991). Individuals, families, or groups from St. John’s and the community can participate by donating $15 a month to a specific, named family for a period of one to twelve months, as they are able. (During this period, photos and letters may be exchanged.) After one year, the Program overall will be assessed and evaluated to determine what changes need to be made for it to better meet its objectives. Cambodian family recipients will be selected on the basis of need by Cambodian members of St. John’s who can identify the poorest members of their native villages and who have previously brought aid (in the form of rice, flood relief, and funding to dig wells) from St. John’s. In their selections, they also will work closely with the Cambodian host of an international radio station in the country (SBK at FM 95) which has long been dedicated to humanitarian relief efforts on a person-to person basis. Funds will be collected and distributed to the adopted families every 3 months by the Khmer Alliance Foundation, a charitable, non-profit, tax-exempt organization, founded in 1988 and successfully working ever since to “help poor and needy Cambodians to improve their lives and living conditions.” This organization helped St. John’s with previous relief aid to Cambodia. This Program is a way to “give back,” in thanks for our blessings of security and prosperity. It puts a personal face on God’s mercy and Christ’s love for our brothers and sisters in need far away. If you are interested in “adopting” a family (or joining together with someone else to do so), please fill out the card below and give it to Tithia Sum, Sharon Malsbary, or Sherry Sullivan. If you wish more information, feel free to contact us and ask questions! Additional Program material is also available at the Church office. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. John's Episcopal Church THANK YOU (aar-kun)Thank you for sharing God's Love and care for the least among us to bring hope and restore quality of life in Cambodia.
